Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Vietnam (Update 3)

31 October 2011

The Health Minister reported (25 Oct 2011) that the outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is under control despite the increasing number of new cases. The disease has killed 137 individuals, mostly children, out of 77 895 infections in the 63 cities and provinces across the country this year.

Advice for Travellers

HFMD is a common viral illness which spreads rapidly among children in particular; outbreaks most often occur in children's nurseries and daycare centres. Transmission is via direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faeces if an infected individual and by aerosol droplet spread. Contact with infected children should be limited and crowded situations avoided; personal hygiene and handwashing is paramount in reducing transmission of the virus.
