Japanese Encephalitis and Other in India (Update 3)

The outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE) is ongoing in Bihar state in the north of India. Cases of JE are being reported in the state capital and surrounding areas. The media has reported that one hospital in Patna has admitted around 250 cases of encephalitis, around 100 of those are said to be JE virus infection. High numbers of cases of JE continue to be reported in Gaya where 68 deaths are reported by the media.

The encephalitis outbreak is also ongoing in eastern Uttar Pradesh state in the north where 449 deaths have been reported. It is not known officially how many of these deaths are due to JE or acute encephalitis syndrome of unknown aetiology which is also being reported from this area.

The government has taken steps to improve vector control in and around homes in the affected areas but this report does not mention any immunisation campaigns.

Advice for Travellers

Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Avoidance of mosquito bites by 'covering up', using insect repellent and impregnated bed nets is essential. Travellers should also maintaim a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene whilst in this area as AES may be caused by an enterovirus.
