West Nile Fever in Greece (Update 1)

As of 20 October 2011, 89 confirmed human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU, 66 of those cases have been recorded in Greece. East Attica, Attiki prefecture reports the highest number of cases (14), followed by Larisa prefecture (9).

France has reported one imported case of West Nile neuroinvasive infection with travel history to Greece. Aitoloakarnania prefecture, an area without previous case reports, has been identified as the place of exposure.

Advice for Travellers

West Nile virus is spread by mosquito bites. It has become more widely recognised in Europe in recent years. Travellers should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites especially during summer months.
