The media have reported on an outbreak of typhoid fever in Harare in the north east of the country. The outbreak began around one month ago and is affecting mainly the residents of Dzivarasekwa community who have resorted to drinking from contaminated wells following a long dry spell. Around 200 individuals have been treated in hospital with many more attending local community clinics who are struggling to cope with the demand.
Harare City Council along with non-governmental organisations such as the National Healthcare Trust Zimbabwe have implemented the drilling of boreholes for safer water in an attempt to control the outbreak.
