Cholera in Democratic Republic of Congo

23 January 2012

A new cholera outbreak has been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The infection has been identified in South Kivu, capital of Bukavu Province, which has a population of over 4.5 million people. More than 1600 confirmed cases including around 14 deaths have been reported since last week. In 2011, almost 19 000 cases and 200 deaths were reported following another cholera outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
