Dengue fever is an ongoing problem in Brazil and several states are reporting outbreaks. Rio de Janeiro state has recorded 40 252 cases so far in 2012. Three areas of Rio de Janeiro city are badly affected: Campo Grande, Madureira and Bangu. In Mato Grosso state, 14 574 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in 2012, this compares with 5153 cases for the same time period in 2011. Dengue fever cases have reached epidemic levels in 14 municipalities of Alagoas state where 4500 cases have been recorded. Pariba state has reported a decrease in the number of dengue fever cases so far this year with 1321 registered, this compares to 6916 cases for the same time period in 2011.
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
