New cholera cases continue to be reported following the onset of the rainy season in Haiti.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has reported that in less than one month the number of cholera cases attending treatment centres in Port-au-Prince and Leogane has tripled; as of end April 2012, 400 cases. The organisation has been forced to re-open cholera treatment centres in Carrefour, south of the capital as centres in Martissant, Delmas and Drouillard which lie closer to the capital risk being overwhelmed.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
