The cholera outbreak in Kismayo is ongoing and has spread to other areas including Mogadishu and towns in the Middle and Lower Shabelle regions of southern Somalia. The Ministry of Health has reported that the rainy season in Mogadishu and the southern areas has exacerbated the spread of infection.
Around 4272 cases of acute watery diarrhoea have reported to Banadir Hospital in 2012, of those 181 have died.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
