Cholera in Cuba (Update)

23 August 2012

The cholera outbreak in Cuba continues. As of 31 July 2012, official figures stand at 236 confirmed cases and 3 deaths. Cases have been reported in the cities of Manzanillo, Bayamo, Yara and Campechuela Niquero in Granma Province.

At the time of this latest report, cases were limited to Granma Province and mostly in Manzanillo. The Ministry of Public Health has implemented control measures including public awareness campaigns and efforts have been made to improve access to safe drinking water and improved environmental hygiene.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera risk outwith the outbreak area is negligible for travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas should discuss their risk with a healthcare professional who can advise on the possible use of the vaccine. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population, and cannot ensure safe drinking water, can be immunised against cholera.

All travellers should practise strict food and water hygiene and wash their hands frequently, especially before eating.
