Typhoid Fever in Zimbabwe (Update)

24 December 2012

The typhoid outbreak continues in Harare and surrounding suburbs, attributed to contamination of city boreholes. The Zimbabwean news agency New Ziana is reporting at least 800 typhoid cases since October (2012). Suburbs affected include the towns of Chitungwiza, Glenview, Dzivarasekwa, and Budiriro.

Over the past 4 years, Zimbabwe has suffered from outbreaks of waterborne diseases as a result of lack of clean water and poor waste management. Efforts are underway to stabilise the situation including use of in-line chlorinators in boreholes to make the water safe.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for those visiting this area. Precaution with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
