The Health Agency for Bali in Indonesia is optimistic that the island will regain its 'rabies free' status by 2015. The number of human cases of rabies has been falling since mass animal vaccination campaigns began in 2010. It has been one year since the last human case of rabies was reported in April 2012.
The Bali Health Agency reports to have stock of rabies vaccine, although use of the vaccine has become more selective recently e.g. deep or multiple wounds, particularly to the head, face and fingers.
Stage 4 of the mass dog vaccination programme for all dogs in Bali will begin mid-April and continue until June 2013. The local population is being encouraged to care for their animals properly and bring them for vaccination.
Advice for Travellers
The rabies situation is improving in Bali but travellers should be aware of the ongoing risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites. Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for those at increased risk.
