Cholera in Ghana

28 July 2014

An outbreak of cholera has been reported in the Greater Accra Region. In the past three weeks, more than 350 individuals have sought medical attention at hospital for treatment of cholera symptoms. Four of Greater Accra's 16 districts are reporting cholera cases: Accra Metro 274, Ga West (14), La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (58) and Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District (4).

A breakdown in waste management, combined with poor standards of hygiene and the onset of the rainy season is being blamed for the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
