Cholera in Ghana (Update)

06 October 2014

The cholera outbreak that began in July 2014, has now spread to two regions that were previously unaffected; Upper East and West Region. There is now only one region (Northern Region) in the country that has not reported any cholera cases.

The Health Minister has reported a spike in cases countrywide, going from 10 000 to 18 000. A total of 150 cholera related deaths have been recorded. The outbreak began in the Greater Accra Region, however, new cases there are said to be decreasing.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
