West Nile Fever in Brazil (Update)

17 December 2014

On 9 December 2014, the Brazilian Ministry of Health detected the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the state of Piauí.  The infection was laboratory-confirmed on 28 November 2014. The patient has since been discharged and will undergo physical therapy to assist recovery.

Four other individuals presented with symptoms; however, laboratory tests ruled out WNV infection. Further tests were performed on 18 other asymptomatic individuals in the area and all results were negative.

Advice for Travellers

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV. Infection is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, therefore avoidance of mosquito bites is essential, by covering up and the use of bite avoidance measures.
