Typhoid Fever in Philippines

20 July 2011

An outbreak, suspected to be typhoid fever, has been identified in the town of Alegria on the island of Cebu. Typhoid fever was reported from the same town six months previously. A total of 87 individuals are thought to have typhoid fever; most of them are residents of Valencia and Compostela Barangays in Alegria. Health officials blame poor sanitation and unsafe water for the ongoing problem in the town. This is a media report and typhoid fever has not been laboratory confirmed.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for those visiting the Philippines. Precautions with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
