18 August 2011

Health officials have reported that 96% of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) fatalities in Vietnam this year have been in children under 5 years of age. The number of deaths has increased to 81, among the 32 588 cases reported in 52 cities and provinces of the country, as reported by the Vietnam Administration of Preventive Medicine. Fatalities have been recorded in 17 cities and provinces, with Ho Chi Minh City recording the highest number (22), followed by the provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Long An and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Advice for Travellers

HFMD is a common viral illness which spreads rapidly among children in particular; outbreaks most often occur in children's nurseries and daycare centres. Transmission is via direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faeces if an infected individual and by aerosol droplet spread. Contact with infected children should be limited and crowded situations avoided; personal hygiene and handwashing is paramount in reducing transmission of the virus.
