Dengue Fever in Pakistan (Update 1)

In Karachi, 18 new dengue fever cases were reported on Friday 16 Sep 2011, raising the number of confirmed dengue patients in the province to 235 this year (2011). Three dengue fever related deaths have also been recorded in the province.

To date, more than 5000 cases of dengue have been reported in Punjab, of which over 4400 are from Lahore. Official figures report 11 people have died in the province. However, unconfirmed reports state that the death toll has reached 18.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
