Typhoid in Zambia (Update)

10 February 2012

The Ministry of Health reports that Zambia has recorded 4396 cases of typhoid since it broke out 3 months ago, with 9 deaths. The country has experienced sporadic outbreaks of the waterborne disease in Kalabo, Mufurila, Nakonde and Lusaka.

Advice for Travellers

Vaccination against typhoid is usually recommended for travellers to Zambia. Precautions with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
