Typhoid Fever in Zimbabwe (Update)

The Ministry of Health reports that the outbreak of typhoid fever which began in Harare is worsening and has now spread to other suburbs and major towns.

To date, there have been two deaths reported out of an estimated 2000 cases. At present, around 200 new cases are being reported each week. Most of the cases have been reported from Kuwadzana, Mufakose and Crowborough but other areas such as Bindura, Mashonaland Central and Kadoma in Mashonaland West are considered to be at risk.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for those visiting this area. Precautions with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
