Cholera in Mali (Update)

25 July 2012

UNICEF is sending 20 000 water sanitation and hygiene kits to the north of Mali in response to the cholera outbreak in the area.

The outbreak began around two weeks ago and to date, 56 cases and 6 deaths have been recorded in Wabaria, Labbezanga and Ansongo in Gao region on the banks of the Niger River.

The onset of the rainy season and the ongoing displacement of people are likely to worsen the situation. UNICEF has implemented cholera prevention for 500 000 people in high risk areas.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
