Cholera in Guinea (Update)

An outbreak of cholera that began in Febuary 2012 and first reported in March is ongoing and has spread to other areas. The total number of cholera cases has increased to 615 with 41 deaths as of 10 Jul 2012. The city of Forecariah is the worst affected area with 3030 cases including 24 deaths, followed by the towns of Mamou (35 cases including 7 deaths), Boffa (157 cases, 6 deaths) and Boke Dubreka (35 cases, 3 deaths). In the capital Conakry, 82 cases and 1 death have been reported.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
