Cholera in Sierra Leone (Update)

25 July 2012

The Ministry of Health has issued a statement on the cholera situation in Sierra Leone. Cholera outbreaks have been reported from the western area, including the capital Freetown and in three other towns in the northern and southern parts of the country.

Between 23 June and 17 July 2012, 3721 cases and 62 deaths have been recorded in the affected areas. The worst affected area is the town of Port Loko in the Northern Province, where 21 children under the age of 5 years have died.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
