New cases continue to be reported in Haiti following a resurgence in cholera after Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. To date, 3593 cholera cases have been confirmed with a further 837 suspected cases. The increase in cases has been more noticable in camps around the capital of Port-au-Prince.
The International Organization for Migration continues to support Haiti with surveillance, monitoring, case management and awareness sessions in the camps. The organisation distributed around 10 000 cholera kits in 31 camps last week.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
