Cholera in South Sudan (Update)

The cholera outbreak in South Sudan is not yet over. A total of 4418 cases and 100 cholera related deaths have been recorded since the outbreak began in May 2014. The majority of cases have been located in Juba, Eastern Equatoria, and Upper Nile states.

The biggest increase of cholera has been reported in Wau Shilluk, a village in Upper Nile downstream from Malakal, with 793 confirmed cases.

Outbreak investigation continues in Malakal and Bol, Upper Nile, Kapoeta North and Eastern Equatoria. A cholera treatment center is planned for Bentiu, Unity State, where suspected have been reported.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
