Cholera in Haiti (Update)

12 January 2012

The cholera outbreak that was first reported from Haiti in October 2010, remains ongoing. As of December 2011, the Ministry of Health has reported a total of 520 000 cholera cases and 7000 cholera related deaths.

This epidemic has been described as "one of the largest cholera outbreaks in modern history to affect a single country." It is thought that cholera will not be eliminated until the sanitation situation in Haiti is vastly improved and everyone in the country has access to safe potable water.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
