Cholera in Guinea (Update)

15 August 2012

The Ministry of Health has reported on the ongoing cholera outbreak in Guinea. To date, a total of 2054 cholera cases have been recorded, including 60 deaths. The capital Conakry and the south-western city of Forecariah are the worst affected areas.

Medecins sans Frontieres and UNICEF are assisted the Ministry of Health with treatment centres and hygiene kits. The health authorities are also running local awareness and education campaigns.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
